Five Things Friday - 8/11

1. Something I Recommend

I just finished Akudama Drive! While it’s been out for a while on Funimation, I don’t have that streaming service and since it came out on Crunchyroll, I immediately took a deep dive! My husband and I finished it in no time flat and of course since it’s by the brilliant creator of Danganronpa, it was addicting.

Think Angels of Death meets Danganronpa meets Devilman Crybaby meets Cyberpunk. It is definitely a cyberpunk feel with a dystopian undertone and lots of twists, turns, and questions that provoke thought outside of the screen.

TO NO ONE’S SURPRISE my favorite character is a Juuzou Suzuya type named Cutthroat. He’s a trip for sure. Let me know if you put it on your watchlist!

2. Something I’m Watching

Besides doing my fourth rewatch of Trigun 98… (I’m so normal about Trigun I swear) I’m watching an anime called My Happy Marriage on Netflix. New episodes are still coming out, and I cannot WAIT to see what’s happening next. I watched all six episodes that came out already in ONE sitting.

This is actually very much outside of my usual anime - it’s a ROMANCE. Can you believe it?! However, the story is captivating, the characters are excellent, AND there’s supernatural powers!

3. Something EXCITING

I’m planning out my Halloween cosplays and videos and am thrilled by the ideas flowing around. Brainstorming is nothing short of one of my favorite parts of cosplay. Especially for things like Halloween, I love finding new concepts for old characters or trying to scrounge together something from my closet, with a few extra bought/ thrifted pieces here and there! I’ll tell you just a few of my secrets for this year shh - some Junji Ito, a few variants of some of my faves like Sanzu and Shigaraki, and some brand new cosplays from new fandoms!

4. Something That Is Keeping Me Up At Night

Oh Lord Millions Knives have mercy on my soul. I finally started Your Turn to Die and it is… BEYOND what I thought it would be even with everyone and their mother warning me about it. So I’m watching a playthrough with no commentary, and I’m so glad I have been because playing this might’ve actually been the end of my sanity haha! Watching a playthrough has also meant that I can see the different endings and paths and how each action affects the rest of the story - which is WILD by the way.

So basically, Your Turn to Die is a “death by majority” game and you vote to advance the plot. There is a lot of horror and extremely disturbing topics and imagery, so proceed with caution. Naturally, why it’s “something that keeps me up at night” is that 1. I want to cosplay from it so badly I can’t STAND IT. So expect some closet cosplays of a few and maaaaybe even one of them at Anime Weekend Atlanta. We’ll see. We’ll see. and 2. I have been SO JUMPY at the horror elements that last night my phone died so I didn’t have a flashlight walking through my house in the dark and I could’ve screamed.

I’m at the beginning of chapter three right now which is the final chapter and I have some favorite characters, but we’ll see how this all plays out.

5. Something I’m Inspired By

I’m not even gonna lie to y’all. I started Your Turn To Die because of this cosplay video. These cosplayers fully inspired me to do this, and their work is always so impeccable. Their videos are character driven, incredibly edited, and informative.

I absolutely HAVE to cosplay Rio Ranger, the one with the orange hair.

Now, when I saw this video I immediately knew the green haired character (Midori) was right up my alley (love a good suit cosplay of a guy who’s… not quite right) but I thought of my duo partner meg.u.mi_tempest for the one with the headpiece and dress. I JUST met these characters in the game so… we’ll uh… see what happens I guess. I might be eating my words but hey this is horror.

Like wouldn’t these characters be so fun for Meg and I to do?! (btw Meg hates horror games so… she’ll probably never play it BUT we’ll see).

Between Rio Ranger and Midori, I don’t know who I want to try first!
